Inline Chat
Ask a model about the code you are reading, without leaving the file.
Inline Chat keeps exploration attached to the editor. Select a block, or just place the cursor on a line, and ask a model to explain behavior, trace a contract, spot risk or suggest a direction, all without leaving the file.
Use it
- Select the relevant code. Rusty sends the open file and marks the exact lines you selected.
- Press ⌘ Enter. The conversation opens beneath the current line and stays anchored to that spot in the editor. You can also choose Open Inline Chat from the editor's context menu.
- Choose a model and ask. Use a local model for ordinary explanation, or a stronger one when the code needs deeper reasoning.
Inside the chat:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Enter | Send. |
| Shift Enter | New line. |
| Esc | Close. |
Good uses
- "Why is the session checked after the token is verified?"
- "What can throw in this block, and who handles it?"
- "Explain what this regex accepts."
When to use something else
Inline Chat is for understanding local code. When the exploration turns into implementation work, capture the decision in a brief or hand it to an agent in Agent Mode, or turn it into a task in Rusty Canvas.
