Installation

Install Rusty with the DMG or Homebrew, keep it up to date, and remove it cleanly.

Requirements

Requirement Details
macOS 11 Big Sur or later
Chip Apple Silicon (M1 or later). There is no Intel build yet.
Internet Needed to reach your model providers.

The app is signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized by Apple.

Note

Only macOS builds are published today. Windows and Linux packaging exists in the repository but is not verified or offered as a download. To try them, see Building from source.

Install with the DMG

  1. Download the latest DMG from the download page. The file is named Rusty-IDE_<version>_aarch64.dmg.
  2. Open the DMG and drag Rusty-IDE into your Applications folder.
  3. Launch Rusty from Applications or Spotlight.

Install with Homebrew

brew install --cask traian18/rusty/rusty-ide

Homebrew verifies the download against a SHA-256 checksum automatically.

Updating

Rusty updates itself. It checks for a new version in the background at startup, and you can check manually under Settings → System → Software Update. When you choose Update Now, Rusty downloads the signed update, verifies it against a public key built into the app, installs it and relaunches.

If you installed with Homebrew, you can update that way instead:

brew upgrade --cask rusty-ide

brew update alone only refreshes Homebrew's own metadata; brew upgrade is the command that installs the new version.

Provider runtimes are downloaded on first use

The installer does not include the runtimes for GitHub Copilot or OpenAI Codex. The first time you sign in to one of them, Rusty downloads only that provider's package into its app data folder, verifies its checksum, and reuses it on later launches. Nothing is downloaded at startup. First use needs an internet connection, and if a download fails you can retry by signing in again.

Uninstall

With Homebrew, this removes the app and its data:

brew uninstall --cask --zap rusty-ide

Without Homebrew, move Rusty-IDE from Applications to the Trash. To also remove its data, delete these folders and files:

~/Library/Application Support/com.rusty.ide
~/Library/Caches/com.rusty.ide
~/Library/Preferences/com.rusty.ide.plist
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.rusty.ide.savedState

Your projects are not touched, including each workspace's .rusty/ folder. Delete those yourself if you want them gone.
